Travelling to Estonia by Plane

Fly to Tallinn: The largest international airport in Estonia is located in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, with direct flights from many major European cities. Information on airlines, schedules and customs is available on the website of Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport (LINK:

​Travelling to Estonia by Boat

Ferries link Tallinn with Stockholm and Helsinki. The main ferry operators are Tallink/Silja Line (LINK:, Viking Line (LINK: and Eckerö Line (LINK:

  • The port of Helsinki, Finland, is 80 km from Tallinn and the journey takes less than 2 hours by ferry. During the summer season (from May to September) ferries depart every few hours.

  • The port of Stockholm, Sweden, is 380 km from Tallinn, and there is a daily ferry (an overnight journey) in both directions.

Travelling in Tallinn

From Tallinn airport to Tallinn bus terminal and the city centre:

Tallinn airport is connected to the city center by bus (line number 2) and tram (line number 4). Both the bus and tram stops are located at the passenger terminal on floor 0. To get to the stops quickly and conveniently use the escalator or elevator.

Tickets: Public transport tickets can be bought from the bus/tram driver for 2€ (with cash only, NB! Paper tickets still need to be validated), by using a contactless bankcard (by swiping the card in front of the validator) or by downloading an app and buying a ticket on your phone. Taxis: There are taxis available in front of the Arrivals Hall in the airport. You can also use ride sharing applications such as Uber (LINK: or Bolt (LINK: to get the cheapest rides.


From Tallinn sea port to the bus terminal:

It takes a little more time to get to the bus terminal from Tallinn sea port: you can either use a taxi or catch tram no.2 (towards Ülemiste) or bus no.2, which will take you to Tallinn Bus Station (the "Bussijaam" stop) from the port. Travelling from Tallinn to Tartu

Tartu can be reached by bus or train. Buses leave directly from Tallinn airport or more frequently from Tallinn bus terminal.

From Tallinn bus terminal to Tartu

The easiest way to reach Tartu is by bus. Buses depart from Tallinn Bus Station to Tartu approximately every 30 minutes from 5.40 AM to 11 PM. You can purchase tickets and check out the detailed timetable here (LINK: The buses are comfortable and most offer free WiFi service, the journey itself from Tallinn to Tartu will take about 2,5 hours.

From Tallinn airport to Tartu:

The bus stops at Tallinn airport are located on floor 0. Most buses departing from Tallinn bus terminal also stop at the airport, with departures from 6.35 AM to 11.05 PM. You can purchase tickets and check out the detailed timetable here (LINK:

If you arrive in Tallinn later than 11 PM, you can book a spot on the Tallinn airport - Tartu shuttle which will take you straight to wherever you're staying in Tartu. You can book a spot on the shuttle here (LINK: The shuttle costs 20 EUR but is still more convenient than spending the night in Tallinn.

If you arrive in Tallinn late in the evening you may need to spend the night in Tallinn. The closest hotel to the airport is the Ülemiste Hotel, although there are many other hotels and hostels in Tallinn.


Getting to Tartu from Tallinn by train.

Trains from Tallinn to Tartu operate 10-11 times a day, and take around 2 hours to reach Tartu. For tickets and timetables check here (LINK: (departure “Tallinn”, destination “Tartu”). The train station is situated just outside the Tallinn Old Town and near the sea port. It can be reached by taxi or tram No. 2 from the sea port (“Balti jaam” stop). Trains are comfortable and you can use WiFi in the first class compartment. Tartu train station is situated just outside the city centre.
